This is a construction and staffing consultancy. We provide owner's representation on large and creative construction projects. Our current project is a private island port of call in Belize for Norwegian Cruise Lines. (NCL is our client, we are not part of NCL itself) Our focus is to represent our client's interests in overseeing and staffing extremely complex construction projects.
Our target audience are corporations and high net worth individuals seeking help in off shore construction projects. We also need to appeal to the potential employee who would like to work for company with high standards for skill in the construction trades. The employees will be those who are confident in their ability to build and create incredibly beautiful structures that blend with and even enhance the natural environment.

The name Hard Nine Ltd. Has a back story that helps understand the name’s origin.
We are in no way associated with gambling. We rarely ever go gambling, but the name was created during the evenings of a terrifically fun business trip playing the dice game “Craps”. For those not familiar with Craps, it is a dice game where you bet on how many times you can roll the dice without “crapping out” by rolling a 7. I won’t explain all the rules here, but one of the many ways of betting are called the Hard Ways. One of these Hard Ways would be to bet that the dice will roll say two 2’s which is called a “Hard Four”. By the same token, two 3’s would be called a “Hard Six”. Two 4’s is a “Hard Eight” and two 5’s is a “Hard Ten”. There is no such thing as a Hard Nine because it’s not an even number. A Hard Nine is impossible in Craps.
During a weekend of continual Craps play (and excessive drinking) there was a strange woman who would join the table and play. She had no idea how to play and was very intoxicated. She tried to copy the other players and join the fun. But she was so drunk she became rather annoying. She had heard several people call Hard Way bets during the evening and decided she would join in. Except she decided she wanted to bet a “Hard Nine”! We tried to explain that a Hard Nine was impossible but she kept saying it. We played at the same table every evening and had terrific luck. We are not big gamblers, but this was one of the most enjoyable gambling experiences we’ve ever had. She kept showing up each night just as drunk as the last so we decided to nickname her Hard Nine.
Later during this same business trip we decided we needed to create a new company to handle the employment and care of specialty construction employees. It was at this point one of our group suggested the name Hard Nine. Its sounded like a great idea and the name Hard Nine was born!
We began contemplating slogans and logos. We considered the challenges of the name itself and the disadvantages of having a number as part of the name. Especially when it comes to websites. But at this point I am very open to how this name can be conveyed in logo format. It can be; Hard Nine Ltd. Hard Nine, Hard 9, or Hard 9 Ltd. Even H9 is possible. I’m not crazy about logos that are just letters and numbers. I prefer easily recognized symbols or shapes with or in the name.
The slogans we considered all contained some reference to impossible odds or doing the impossible. But these are references to gambling and may not be understood by many who haven’t played the game. So we are open to all suggestions. But I personally like the idea that we are working Hard against impossible odds. So anything along those lines would be considered.
We also considered the logo could be dice. We thought maybe a 4 with half a dot in the center of each, but worry that it might be difficult to read on a sign from a distance or on a work truck. It doesn’t need to have any visual reference to dice or gambling. It can be subtle so only those who know the game are compelled to ask about it.
The team involved in the name decision are visionary people. Several have had long and successful careers as Disney Imagineers for Disney World. The Hard Nine name should convey a sense of fun and vision. Not too refined but also not childish. I like logos that are simple with minimal colors so its easy to make signs and business cards. If the same message can be conveyed in black and white as it is in color then that’s even better.
