I am selling a tech company and in the process of opening a custom motorcycle repair and design company. My eldest son is finishing his training and I want to set him up in a business that repairs motorcycles, but also offers customizations. He wants to do quality repair, but also sell tanks and fenders with custom paint over the internet to people who want to give the appearance that they are 'bad to the bone' and live life 'Full throttle 'til you see God'.
The demographic Harley Davidson quotes is typically white male 42-47 year old for the repairs, and white male 21-45 for the custom paint options, however motorcyclists come in all ages, colors, and socio-economic types.
All motorcycle businesses acknowledge the demographic with the most room for potential is the female rider so we will want to keep that in mind. The temptation at first blush is to deliver art that conveys the typical - the same skull and crossbones we see everywhere in the motorcycle industry - but we are looking for something a little different.
We named it grimcustoms because the definition of grim is appropriate for the biker mentality and my son always liked the old images of the 'grimreaper.'
I graduated from art school way back before desktop publishing and I know that this is the hardest part.
I can tell you that the 'Sailor Jerry" artistic style is a favorite as it is based on tatoo art and bikers pride themselves on their tatoos. The use of the Reaper is not required, but it was in our minds when we named it. If you do anything with a cycle look to it - your work will come under technical scrutiny unless the look is more the impression of a motorcycle, rather than a specific brand or silhoutte of a type of motorcycle. (ie chopper, streetbike, Harley vs. Ninja, etc.)
We are looking for a logo to be used on business cards, postcards, repair reminder static cling stickers, and t-shirts. The ideal design would be simple and powerful and something that prints well in 4-color but also can be pared down for a 1 or 2 color option.
The industry tends to do a lot on black backgrounds - but we are open to your ideas.
