We really just want to see how you might come up with ideas ideas for what we’ve done already, taking some inspiration from video on demand web apps such as Netflix and the others listed below.
We are happy for you to explore either light (e.g. Ted Talks, Youtube) or dark designs (e.g Netflix), although we would like to see our brand colour (#2ABBB3) used in the designs somehow (either as an accent for calls to action or to inform the palette based on complementary colours).
Google Material design is also an inspiration given it's use of whitespace, clean, subtle design sensibilities (albeit a slight evolution of the sometimes over-simplistic flat design) and considered use of motion.
Exploring the use of (more than 2 colour?) gradients might be interesting too.
In some of our other branding we use geometric shapes in backgrounds (similar to the iPlayer iPad app start-up screen) so this might also be something you want to play with. You can see that we have uploaded a creative design concept for the homescreen that explores this design idea for some of the featured content blocks/hero, but there could of course be different ways of using it (if you so wish).
Another idea that you might want to explore if you think it has merit is seeing if we can do anything interesting to use or reference the rectangle bounding 11FS in our logo, similar to how RIBA use their ‘frame’ in some of their marketing collateral (see example images attached to the brief).
We have also uploaded some other design examples that we like.
IMPORTANT NOTE: the images for the rows of tiles that relate to individual videos will use screenshots taken from mobile or web banking apps (see the initial design concept we uploaded for reference) so this is a little different from Netflix who have 'nice' images for every tile. We aren't quite as lucky as Netflix who have lots of lovely visuals (and it is also harder obviously to create a 'house style' for the video tiles when you have 1000's of journeys across 100's of brands who all look different). You might have several videos for each bank also (so we can't just use the bank logo since you might end up with an entire row of tiles using the same thumbnail if that row focuses on just one bank that we might want to promote). For example, for each bank you might have a video that relates to registering the app for the first time, then another for checking balances, then another for making payments, etc. This does limit how creative we can be with the thumbnail 'teaser' images in each of these types of tiles (and also means we have some potential legibility issues if text is overlaid onto the thumbnail since some app screenshots might be white, others dark, etc). However, we have much more freedom from a creative perspective with the hero at the top and the feature tiles lower down the screen such as the blog posts, etc.
