K&A Custom Painting
I am a friend of the owner of K&A Custom Painting. I am responsible for getting their website designed and deployed to a Wordpress host. I'm their 'techy' friend who used to do some web programming but is out of touch with modern web standards.
The owner, Anna-stina, has some specific design input for what she wants. Together, Anna-stina and I are looking for a simple but clean/modern website that is graphically appealing and easily added to. I am not a professional web designer so we need a simple, easily maintained website that she can edit herself.
We've decided Word Press is the way to go, and we've determined we need at least a three-page, simple website design that will enable Anna-stina to upload photos, and write blog-style entries about her craft.
They are a two-person company, but with high-end clients. The site has to look professional and modern, but we need to keep design and maintenance costs in check. We are interested in designs that will be easy to templatize and build upon. I am not a professional web designer and need to set Anna-stina up to easily update her site without having to come to me.
Typical clientelle are higher-end homeowners, small business owners and some commercial interior painting contractors. We market to owners of older houses that need restoration work, homeowners needing to redesign their house color schemes, new construction and remodels as well. We market to clients that are looking for high-end specialty contractors willing to spend top dollar for the best in custom interior painting and restoration.
I need a design for a Wordpress-driven website that is used for advertising a painting company.
The site will primarily used by the owner to describe her painting process in articles from time-to-time, and to display hi-res photographs of their work. The owners will often be using the site while sitting with the client, talking about the photos, but also advertising their services via the site.
There are three (or possibly) four main types of work they do:
Restoration
Renovation
Decoration & Color
(Optional) Hardware and Maintenance
The owner needs to be able to upload new articles and photos within each category. Each category can operate like a blog. The owner can write new articles in each section describing her process. They have a lot of photographs to upload, so the owner would like to keep the site updated with new information. Tidbits of their services, recommendations, etc.
Each category must have a photo-gallery that she can easily maintain. That gallery should make it easy for the user to scroll through images and open up images to see hi-res versions for a closer look. We're open design suggestions there. We need it to be simple for the owner to add images to a category, but we also need the gallery control to look cool.

Home Page
A home page. Accessible at http://www.yourpersonalpainters.com. See the Style notes for some tips on colors and descriptions of what we want.
Visually appealing home page that has four primary links to the main category pages of the site. The four categories are:
Category Page/Photo Gallery
Each category will have a main page which should be editable like a blog. The owner will edit the category home page from time to time, uploading new articles and photos. A simple blog-style page here is ideal, so that the owner can upload images and write copy and post articles from time-to-time. Each category page should provide access to a photo-gallery showing the images in that category.
Photo Gallery
A photo gallery that displays multiple images, with some sort of easy navigation through the gallery. The gallery must be able to display hi-res images if the user “zooms” in or selects an images from a thumbnail carousel or something like that. The template should expect uniformly-sized images, but should gracefully handle portrait and landscape images.
I’m open to designs where we can use freely available photo-gallery plugs in like this one http://www.cabel.name/2008/02/fancyzoom-10.html.

I just threw this together. I like the image, but I'm not stuck on this design. We both liked the architectural, clean lines of the image. I did some of the color in the links because she's all about color.
The owner has provided her color pallette, so as far as I'm concerned we can ignore this design, but it was something we both thought was decent.
This isn't a website but a link to a Google Doc describing what we want.
